Harbors and Anchors During the Storm
Times are turbulent these days. I feel this turbulence at work and in everyday life – I also see that in the life of our church. Biblical values our church has held as foundational have lately been questioned by many in our society.
As a congregation, we try to make our church be a safe harbor – for people who are affected, in need, and for ourselves. The need for our church to be a safe harbor is being felt keenly, and the needs for us to be there for our community are only likely to grow.
However, in this turbulence, I have hope. The impact our church has within our community and the impact the church has had on me is what gives me this hope. Our church is a a safe harbor in Downton Madison. Not only that, but our faith community also provides us with portable “anchors”.
Each of us can share our “anchor” with the community by engaging with one of the many service opportunities here at First Church – like Second Harvest or Hope’s Home Ministries. We can also share the love of God we receive at First Church with people in need, or simply listen to others with open ears.
When we stand together as a congregation, it is easier to carry our anchors out to our community to provide stability in rough seas.
